WHEN Kevin Rudd was ignominiously dumped from the prime ministerial position to which he had been elected, I strongly supported the candidacy of Julia Gillard. On the record and behind the scenes, my message was the same. Since Copenhagen in December 2009, Rudd had been in some sort of personal black hole. His governance was erratic at best and I could see Labor's chances worsening by the hour. Gillard had been a terrific deputy and she was the logical choice.
